Calibrating a CMYK Mac Monitor?
I just started working for a local newspaper here in my hometown. Everything we print is CMYK. However, the monitor doesn’t display CMYK information. What I see is not even close to what prints out. I’ve done the Advanced Calibration and can get kinda/sorta close. I’m working on a Mac using OS X and using MultiAd Software for the layout designs. Any help would be appreciated
I don’t have a good answer for you. It’s possible that someone has some specialty software for this, but the problem in general is difficult, because the two systems, RGB for monitors and CMYK for print, do not fit each other, and cannot, as illustrated in the references below. In particular, the need to use black in rendering print affects the conversion.
It’s likely that your pressmen and make-ready crew can give you a handle on this, as to how the problem is solved for your particular operation. Color printing is an art, and in higher-quality work (not newspapers, though) between six and 15 or more colors of ink may be used to get the intended results. Clients of high-quality color printing outfits often have their representatives and artists on site at the press room for press approval.
